More than 2,000 NAD YLC Alumni have said, “YLC is an once-in-a-lifetime experience!” This is true for the above reasons and especially for upper high school students who crave the kind of stimulation that is only found at NAD YLC—a unique, one-of-a-kind all-around leadership program, self-growth, and more!
About NAD YLC:
The NAD Youth Leadership Camp (YLC), currently held at Camp Taloali in Stayton, Oregon is a four-week summer camp program for deaf and hard of hearing high school students. The Camp is an extension of the activities and training offered by the Junior NAD. NAD YLC focuses on the Youth Programs’ mission – developing scholarship, leadership, and citizenship.
This highly popular program has graduated over 2,000 alumni in its 38 years of existence. Many of these alumni have become successful individuals and apply what they have learned from NAD YLC as leaders and advocates for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
Camp program and activities emphasizes ‘learning by doing,’ adopting the old Chinese proverb: "Tell me, and I'll forget. Show me, and I'll remember. Involve me, and I'll learn." Campers discover self-identity, develop self-esteem and confidence, and build leadership and teamwork skills through hands-on activities. Examples of activities and their basis are: focusing on literacy; social studies; health; drama; deaf culture, language, and heritage; current issues; group dynamics; team building; outdoor activities, and more. Those activities keep in mind the ideals of all NAD Youth programs: Scholarship, Leadership and Citizenship. (SLC)

General information:
Who Can Go?
The NAD YLC program is open to all deaf and hard of hearing upper high school students (currently sophomores and juniors) who are currently leaders or aspiring leaders at their residential deaf schools and/or public schools. Applicants will be screened based on their academic standing, character, leadership potential and total contribution to their school and community.
Who Can Be Staff?
The NAD YLC annually seeks highly qualified staff who themselves personify the ideals of NAD YLC- Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship. College students, young professionals, teachers, and other individuals of any ages over 21 years old who can contribute time in the summer for the aspirations of deaf and hard of hearing youth are welcome to apply. NAD YLC staff members are often involved in leadership and advocacy activities outside of camp and represent the finest young adults in the deaf and hard of hearing community.
We do not only need young adults, we need older adults with more experience to serve as a mentor to young staff members or to be on the administration team. At camp, they find themselves diving in to guide campers by giving classes, interacting on a daily basis as role models and more.
Being a staff member is ultimately a two-way street for youth leadership, benefiting both staff member and camper. Many have been NAD YLC alumni themselves; however being a former camper is not a requirement. During NAD YLC, and often afterwards, the staff act as role models to campers.
What Language is Used?
The NAD YLC program is conducted entirely in American Sign Language (ASL).
