On March 14, 2010, the NAD and consumer groups filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) responding to questions about funding for video relay services (VRS), for an “interim” one-year period from July 2010 through June 2011. In our comments we told the FCC to make sure that the rates continue the current level of relay services and continue to advance functionally equivalent telecommunications.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently received video relay service (VRS) rates for July 2010 to June 2011 from the National Exchange Carrier Association (NECA). The FCC is asking for comments about the proposed VRS rates. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) learned that some people are saying that the proposed rates will tear down VRS. These claims have not been supported. The FCC has said many times that it supports VRS and recognizes the value, importance, and functional equivalency that VRS provides to people who use American Sign Language (ASL). We encourage consumers to turn to consumer organizations, such as the NAD, to learn about the issues and how to protect their civil, human, and linguistic rights through public comments and action.

Hi again! The April 15, 2010 visit to the Capitol Hill was very successful for the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and its supporters. I have exciting news to share: two Republicans agreed to co-sponsor the Twenty-first Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2009, also called HR 3101! They are Rep. Parker Griffith (AL), a member of the Communications, Technology and the Internet Subcommittee, and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL). Please be sure to thank them for their support! With the vital support of these Republicans along with the 44 Democratic co-sponsors, we hope Rep. Rick Boucher (VA) who currently is the chair of the subcommittee will finally decide that it is time to move the bill into the subcommittee.

Hello, my name is David King and I am from Nigeria in Africa. I came to America on September 11, 2001. We arrived around 6 am in the morning with my now ex-wife. My cousin was supposed to pick us but she never showed up. There was no way for us to contact her even though a TTY was available, I did not know how to use it. We were so new, nervous and did not know what to do at that time. People looked at us as we communicated in sign language. Someone noticed us and approached us to see if we need any help.

Bonjour! Spring is here. Stopping to watch the birds fly, taking out your flip-flops, trying a new recipe, imagining walking through the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, France. At this time of the year, there is always a sense of refreshment and enlightenment. For every season, there is a reason. NAD has something exciting to share.

Paris, ah, Paris!  For us Paris carries a significant place in our cultural history. This city was once lauded as a site of intellectual activity where visionaries, poets, and artists would meet and work alongside each other like Renoir and Monet. There, they were influenced by the amazing ideas and philosophies they exchanged, much like we see our deaf artists doing today.
