The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce a banner year in advocacy and operations for fiscal year 2010-2011, which ends on March 31, 2011. The NAD starts fiscal year 2011-2012 on April 1, 2011 in strong financial health with exciting prospects for growth.
There’s a perk in every commitment. May it be meeting new people, networking, exchanging of ideas…or, even better, warmer weather. On January 27th, I flew from a frigid, freezing, icy Washington D.C. to balmy and breezy San Jose, Costa Rica for the 17th Board Meeting of the World Federation of the Deaf Youth Section. (It’s “WFDYS” for short.) I’ve been serving on the board as secretary (and, as well the website developer, translator, videographer, and organizer) since 2007.
Hello! It's already February! Time has flown by quickly since July, when the NAD Conference was held in Philadelphia, PA. It has been seven months since I have been crowned as Miss Deaf America Ambassador! In January, the NAD Board met in Austin, Texas. It was an exciting experience for me to observe their board meeting. The NAD also held a fundraiser where a variety of cupcakes, donated by various bakeries, were auctioned! I truly enjoyed that event.
Hello my name is Rachel Maziaque, Miss Deaf America Ambassador of 2010-2012. I'm from Arilngton Heights, a suburb of Chicago, where John Hersey High School, with a deaf program is located. Academy-award winning actress/writer Marlee Matlin also graduated from the same high school.

Greetings. Schools for the deaf across the nation are facing a severe crisis and we need you to act now. Some are under threat of closure, some face drastic budget cuts that would underfund the school, and others face challenges to promoting an environment where education and interaction is provided visually, in American Sign Language.

We did it! Together, we had a wildly successful year with advocacy accomplishments too numerous to list here. Our 50th Biennial NAD Conference in Philadelphia, PA exceeded expectations and plans are underway for 2012 in Louisville, KY. Thanks to your support, we now have stable operations at headquarters and we're working towards a better, brighter future for the benefit of all!
The 21st International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED) held in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18-22, 2010 drew over 800 participants from 62 countries. MSD Board members Barbara Raimondo, Esquire, Dr. Cynthia Neese-Bailes, Dr. Angela McCaskill and I along with 84 other Americans attended the Congress. The first ICED was held in 1878 in Paris, France and is now held every five years. Today, ICED is perhaps the most recognized international conference for educators and researchers working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
