Hello! I am Bobbie Beth Scoggins, president of the National Association of the Deaf. This is a special announcement on the CEO Search process, begun in the summer of 2009 by the NAD Board of Directors.
On March 14, 2010, the NAD and consumer groups filed comments with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) responding to questions about funding for video relay services (VRS), for an “interim” one-year period from July 2010 through June 2011. In our comments we told the FCC to make sure that the rates continue the current level of relay services and continue to advance functionally equivalent telecommunications.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently received video relay service (VRS) rates for July 2010 to June 2011 from the National Exchange Carrier Association (NECA). The FCC is asking for comments about the proposed VRS rates. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) learned that some people are saying that the proposed rates will tear down VRS. These claims have not been supported. The FCC has said many times that it supports VRS and recognizes the value, importance, and functional equivalency that VRS provides to people who use American Sign Language (ASL). We encourage consumers to turn to consumer organizations, such as the NAD, to learn about the issues and how to protect their civil, human, and linguistic rights through public comments and action.
On February 25, 2010, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a Declaratory Ruling (DA 10-314). In the Declaratory Ruling, the FCC Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau (CGB) addressed payment for certain types of Video Relay Service (VRS) by the Interstate Telecommunications Relay Service Fund (TRS Fund). The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) commends the FCC for taking action, but we also have concerns about the Declaratory Ruling.
In 1969, the British rock group “The Who” recorded a two-record album titled “Tommy.” This album has a song entitled “Pinball Wizard.” The refrain to this song is:
That deaf, dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball!
Greetings!
I want to take this opportunity to extend warm wishes to you and your loved ones for this year’s holiday season and New Year, on behalf of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Board of Directors and staff.
The Board of Directors of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) announces that it has begun search efforts for a successor to Chief Executive Officer Nancy J. Bloch, in preparation for her departure on March 31, 2011. Appointed in 1992 as the first female director, Bloch also serves as ex officio member of the Board.
We launched this brand-new and beautiful website on June 30. Our deep gratitude goes to headquarters staff, who worked very hard to pull this off in a very short timeframe, just three months – a task that usually takes six months or more. This would not have been possible without the support of our web development team at Brilliant Echo, hosting services with DeafVision, and most of all, the strategic web sponsorship of Sprint, Purple Communications, and The Z.
Spring is here! Flowers are everywhere. Summer is just around the corner.
