Y. Youth. L. Leadership. C. Camp. Hi. By looking at the quote, I feel inspired. I am Jennifer Yost-Ortiz, the Director of Youth Leadership Programs. Where am I!? I am at YLC (Youth Leadership Camp) in Oregon. Right now, such an exciting time, YLC celebrates its 40th year anniversary. Since its inception, there are over 2,500 YLC alums and I am proud to share that many YLC alums have become successful in their lives and in various areas such as employment and college. In addition, many YLC alums have received PhDs. YLC alums are the reason why YLC has remained strong for the past 40 years. Many campers congregate here from different backgrounds; some from local schools, some from large mainstream deaf programs, some from schools for the deaf, and some from other countries. Quite a diverse bunch, but we share one common goal – becoming leaders of tomorrow. For the whole month, we receive constant, positive stimulation in different ways. Some schools and communities share their strengths and weaknesses. However, as campers learn, they receive an all-around exposure that they do not receive at their schools and communities. At YLC, campers learn and develop their abilities and share them when they return to their schools and communities.
From now and beyond, next 40 years and many more, we always welcome future campers, staff members, chef, nurse, volunteers, and alums. They are welcome, even to give a presentation or just to visit, anytime. Together, we are one big family.
