The Housing pages, under the Legal Rights section of the NAD website include information for deaf and hard of hearing consumers and their families who want to know about their rights when working with a realtor to purchase a home or who are looking for or are tenants in private and public rental housing.
Whether you are a first-time homebuyer or are experienced, read about your rights when working with a real estate agent. Access to the services of a realtor is covered under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act, under Public Accommodations.
If you are a renter, your rights are covered under the Fair Housing Act that prohibits landlords, real estate sellers, condominium management companies and homeowners’ associations from discrimination based on disability. The regulations to the Fair Housing Act include responsibilities of landlords and building owners. Find out if your state has a law that requires landlords to provide free visual smoke detectors.
