NAD Announces Release of Two Mental Health Position Statements

Victory! NAD Makes a Touchdown in Groundbreaking Redskins Case
In an opinion issued on September 30, 2008, a federal district court in Maryland held that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires the Washington Redskins “to provide deaf and hard of hearing fans equal access to the aural information broadcast over the stadium bowl public address system at FedExField, which includes music with lyrics, play information, advertisements, referee calls, safety/emergency information, and other announcements.”

NAD Celebrates as “ADA Amendments Act” Becomes Law
The NAD applauds the signing into law of the “ADA Amendments Act of 2008” by President George W. Bush. This law is a civil rights landmark; a law that enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support and the support of the disability and business communities. (9/27/08)

NAD Advocates for Accessible Air Travel!
The NAD met with U.S. Department of Transportation officials to discuss the Department’s new rules related to the Air Carrier Access Act. The NAD and the Department of Transportation also discussed captioning of in-flight entertainment, such as movies and other video programs. The NAD encourages people who experience communication access problems at airports or on airplanes to file complaints with the Department of Transportation.

ADA Amendments Act Goes to the White House
On September 17, 2008, the U.S. House of Representatives accepted and passed the ADA Amendments Act that was passed by the U.S. Senate on September 11, 2008. The bill now goes to the White House. The NAD urges the president to sign the ADA Amendments Act into law. (9/18/08)

Senate Passes ADA Amendments Act 
On September 11, 2008, the U.S. Senate passed the "ADA Amendments Act of 2008" (formerly called the "ADA Restoration Act"). The House of Representatives passed a similar bill in June. The NAD has worked with other advocacy and disability groups to move these bills forward and passed quickly. (9/14/08)

NAD Wins Victory in Court for Relay Users 
The NAD represented a deaf man in an employment discrimination case in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. Key evidence, a relay call between the employer and the deaf job applicant, was excluded by the district court. The Court of Appeals said that was wrong. (9/13/08)
