The Junior National Association of the Deaf (Junior NAD) is a coalition of individual chapters at junior high and high schools all over the nation. Through Junior NAD, the NAD invests in students so they might become future leaders of the deaf and hard of hearing community.
The Junior NAD was founded in 1961 to develop interest and leadership among young deaf students in State Associations and/or organizations of the deaf and to provide a meaningful group activity for them. As a program of the NAD, the Junior NAD offers deaf and hard of hearing students in 7th through 12th grade many opportunities to develop leadership skills, learn and demonstrate citizenship, and meet and interact with students from other schools and states. The Junior NAD also seeks to empower its members so they can contribute to the development of their school and community.
Junior NAD members learn leadership and teamwork skills through their involvement in their school’s chapter. Members can serve as officers or work on committees, learn how to develop and execute fundraisers, and participate in advocacy efforts either within their school or on city, state, and national levels. Involvement with the Junior NAD also gives students the opportunity to learn about the structure, function, and advocacy efforts of their local associations of the Deaf, State Associations, advocacy organizations, and the NAD.
Members of Junior NAD can represent their chapters as delegates at the biannual national Junior NAD conference, during which they can participate in contests including creative writing, essays, poetry, and photography. The Mr. and Ms. Junior NAD Pageant is also held during the conference.
