NAD Issues Statement on Supreme Court Vacancy

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) issued a statement in response to Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s resignation.

Andrew J. Lange, NAD President stated, on behalf of the Association, that, “The resignation of Justice O’Connor comes at momentous time in history. We are celebrating, this very month, the 15th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act when President Bush’s father signed the ADA into law in 1990.

“The NAD encourages President Bush to honor his father’s lasting legacy by appointing a Justice who is committed to protecting the United States Constitution and ensuring that the ADA and other Civil Rights Laws are not destroyed.

“The Supreme Court has historically played an important role in carrying out our founding fathers’ vision of developing a country where each person has the right to `life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.’

“The National Association of the Deaf urges President Bush to take advantage of this opportunity to bring the country together, by working closely with both parties in Congress and to nominate someone who has a demonstrated commitment to human and civil rights and to the independence of the judiciary.”
