Resort Agrees to Provide Accessible Technology

Great Wolf Lodge  has entered into an historic agreement to make all of its eleven resorts fully accessible to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing. Over the next year, Great Wolf Lodge, the nation’s largest family of indoor water park resorts, will develop and roll-out a new interactive system that uses new technology to provide deaf and hard of hearing people full, equal and contemporaneous access to its MagiQuest game, and all of its other entertainments.

After many years of hard work by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and other organizations and advocates,  the IP closed captioning rules were published in the Federal Register on March 30, 2012 and establishes April 30, 2012 as the effective date for the rules.  According to the rules, video programming shown on the Internet after being shown on television must have captions based on the following schedule established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

NAD Comments on the Importance of IP Relay

On March 20, 2012, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) took the lead, and was joined by other consumer groups, in submitting a comment in response to the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) Public Notice asking about the importance of IP Relay and possible measures to reduce fraud. 

NAD Files VRS Reform Comments, Consumer Reply Comments Due March 30

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) appreciates all of the comments submitted by the community. By our count, over 50 independent members of the community submitted comments to the FCC on VRS Reform for the initial comment period. The NAD worked closely with TDI and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consumer Advocacy Network (DHHCAN) to file comments through the Consumer Groups. To see a copy of our comments, visit:

Celebrate Deaf History Month: March 13-April 15, 2012

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) urges everyone to recognize and celebrate March 13 - April 15 as National Deaf History Month.  This month includes three key moments in American History for the Deaf community: the March 13, 1988 Deaf President Now protest, the April 8, 1864 signing of the Gallaudet University charter by President Abraham Lincoln, and the April 15, 1817 establishment of American School for the Deaf in Hartford, CT as the first permanent public school for the deaf.

Renowned author Jack R. Gannon will give a presentation about his new book, "World Federation of the Deaf: A History," on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at the Central Library - Wheeler Auditorium in Baltimore, MD. This book is the first ever detailing the first 50 years of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD).
