NAD and Consumer Groups Develop a Telecommunications Relay Policy Statement

The National Association of the Deaf along with other consumer groups representing individuals with hearing or speech disabilities developed a Telecommunications Relay Service Policy Statement defining "functional equivalency." Functional equivalency is a cornerstone of Title IV of the Americans with Disabilities Act and requires that Telecommunication Relay Services provided for individuals with hearing and speech disabilities be functionally equivalent to voice telephone services.

During the episode that aired on April 3, 2011, she took on the task of being Project Manager and raised one million dollars which is more funds than has ever been raised for charity in a single event on any television show. With her legendary finesse and poise, Ms. Matlin -- the youngest person to have won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Film -- has demonstrated once again that barriers can be shattered.

NAD Supports IDEA Bill Calling for Recovery of Expert Fees

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) supports the Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA) Fairness Restoration Act bill proposed in both the House and the Senate. This bill will allow parents to recover expert witness fees in due process hearings and litigation under the IDEA. Too many parents pay for their own expert witness after successfully prevailing against their school districts. The current rule is an unfair financial burden thatdiscourages parents from rightfully fighting for the education their children deserve under the IDEA.

The Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights & Urban Affairs, Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, the National Association of the Deaf and the U.S. Department of Justice today jointly announced a Consent Decree negotiated with Inova Health System to ensure that Inova Fairfax Hospital will provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services to patients, and patients’ companions, who are deaf or hard of hearing.

New ADA Standards Now in Effect

The Department of Justice (DOJ) revised Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations are now in effect as of March 15, 2011. This is the first major revision of its guidance on accessibility in twenty years. The changes are expected to have a sweeping impact on the everyday lives of people with disabilities in the United States. The new revisions mainly focus on making places of public accommodations more accessible for people with disabilities. They also expand some current non-discrimination policies.

NAD Condemns Tragic Police Killing of Hard of Hearing Man

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) sent a letter to the Seattle Police Chief John Diaz regarding the tragic killing of John T. Williams, a hard of hearing First Nation artist, by then Seattle Police Officer Ian Birk on August 30, 2010. Williams was shot four times by the officer while working with a knife on a board and allegedly did not respond to an officer’s repeated warning to drop his knife.

The National Association of the Deaf recently sued Chester River Health System and selected medical professionals for lack of effective communication. Phillip Henry, represented by the NAD, along with co-counsel Joseph Espo of Brown, Goldstein, & Levy, LLP., was denied sign language interpreting at each of his visits before, during, and after a medical procedure.
