The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) launched a new effort in its ongoing advocacy on behalf of drivers who are deaf and hard of hearing and who wish to obtain Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs). The United States Department of Transportation (DOT), through its regulations, has long required individuals seeking CDLs to satisfy Physical Qualification Standards before becoming eligible to receive a CDL.
The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Emergency Access Advisory Committee (EAAC) released an online survey to determine the best technologies and methods by which people with disabilities may access the next generation of 9-1-1 emergency services systems. The survey asks questions about accessing emergency services via video, text, and voice. This is an important issue for deaf and hard of hearing people since the 9-1-1 system has historically been inaccessible or difficult to access.
In January 2011 the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) began collaborating with the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) and Lewis, Feinberg, Lee, Renaker & Jackson, P.C., a premiere civil rights law firm, to explore the legal implications of the failure of Netflix to provide closed captioning on "Watch Instantly" streamed movies.

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce the hire of Andrew Phillips as staff attorney in the NAD Law & Advocacy Center. Phillips joins Debra Patkin, a deaf staff attorney, and Marc Charmatz, long-time staff attorney. Patkin and Charmatz will continue their litigation work to push for systemic change, while Phillips will advocate for policy change through federal government relations.

National Association of the Deaf (NAD) commends the National Football League (NFL) and FOX Broadcasting Company for achieving a significant captioning milestone on February 6, 2011 by ensuring captioning commitments from all national commercials and promotions for Super Bowl XLV. For the first time ever for any television show, all national network promotions and all national commercials by the companies that bought advertising space were captioned. This milestone was facilitated by a FOX policy that required all Super Bowl XLV commercials come with caption files.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) participated in the 10th annual Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Conference, February 20-22, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia.
