Action Alert: Demand Accessible Equipment and Furniture

As technology advances, deaf and hard of hearing people often are left behind. Talking ATMs? Inaccessible. Alarms in state or local government buildings? Inaccessible. Televisions on gym equipment? Inaccessible. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking comments from the public - that’s you - on its requirements for State and local agencies and public accommodations on providing accessible equipment and furniture.

Have an emergency? Better dust off the TTY if you want immediate and direct assistance. No TTY? No direct connection to 9-1-1. Get in line to wait for the next available relay operator.

Right now, the only way a deaf or hard of hearing person can directly call 9-1-1 is through a TTY. We are unable to use our pagers or videophones to directly call 9-1-1 when a life is at stake.

Videos, streaming movies, webinars, online tutorials, online courses, and webisodes often come without captions, leaving the deaf and hard of hearing community in the dark. Stop wasting time staring at uncaptioned context on the web and take action! Demand access to websites of state and local governments and businesses open to the public.

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the law firm of Chason, Rosner, Leary & Marshall L.L.C., filed a complaint in federal court against the National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America (NCAC), alleging that the NCAC has failed to ensure effective communication for one of its troop members, Wolfgang Staley, who is deaf. The complaint was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Maryland.

NAD Says Farewell to Crawford, Announces Staff Attorney Vacancy

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) thanks Rosaline Crawford, director of the NAD Law and Advocacy Center, for her years of dedicated service and wishes her well upon her departure from the NAD on December 31, 2010. Rosaline expects to begin working in January 2011 as an attorney advisor at the Federal Communications Commission, Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, Disability Rights Office.
 

Historic NAD Film Selected for Preservation by Library of Congress

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) film "Preservation of Sign Language" by George W. Veditz was selected to the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress along with other films such as "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back", "All the President's Men", "Malcolm X", and "Saturday Night Fever".

NAD Calls Out Netflix on "Deaf Tax"

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) sent a follow-up letter to Netflix today requesting that they do the following:

  • Caption all of their Watch Instantly videos,
  • in the interim, provide an easy way to search for videos that are captioned, and
  • address concerns about Netflix's plan to charge increased fees for access to DVDs which are generally captioned while Watch Instantly videos which are largely uncaptioned.

The NAD urges consumer advocates to continue and contact Netflix to demand that they caption all of their videos.

NAD Testifies at Dept. of Justice Hearing

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) testified today at the Department of Justice's hearing on ANPRMs on Accessibility of Web Information and Services Provided by Entities Covered by the ADA presented by Shane H. Feldman, Chief Operating Officer; Accessibility of Next Generation 9-1-1 presented by Debra J. Patkin, Staff Attorney; and Movie Captioning and Video Description presented by Suzy Rosen Singleton, NAD volunteer advocate. The NAD will provide written comments on Equipment and Furniture.
