[VIDEO] The United States Senate votes tomorrow, December 4th, on whether or not to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CRPD). The National Association of the Deaf (“NAD”), along with the United States International Council on Disabilities, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Chamber of Commerce, the American Bar Association, and over 300 organizations, supports the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Shane Feldman Departs NAD to Lead RID as Executive Director

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) congratulates Shane H. Feldman for his selection as the new Executive Director of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). The NAD greatly benefited from Mr. Feldman’s leadership and contributions in his role as the Chief Operating Officer for the past three years and wishes him great success in his new endeavors at RID.

November 25, 2012 marks the 300th birthday of Abbé Charles-Michel de l’Épée, to whom millions of deaf and hard of hearing people around the world owe a great deal of thanks. Abbé de l’Épée (November 25, 1712 – December 23, 1789) is regarded by the World Federation of the Deaf as the Father of Deaf Education.

Politicians everywhere want our votes and each group that has a large number of votes can push for important legal and political issues. Ask the candidates who want your vote what they will do for the rights of deaf and hard of hearing people! Vote for the candidate who you think will promote our rights!

NAD to Host Board Meeting in Bay Area, California Oct 11-12

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) will host its next Board meeting in the Bay Area, California at the California School for the Deaf – Fremont in the Little Gym. The Board meeting is open to the public on Thursday, October 11 from 1:30 – 5:00 pm and from 8 am to 4 pm on Friday, October 12.

Netflix and the National Association of the Deaf Reach Historic Agreement to Provide 100% Closed Captions in On-Demand Streaming Content Within Two Years

Netflix Inc. and the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), a non-profit organization, have submitted a joint Consent Decree to a federal court in Springfield, Mass., ensuring closed captions in 100% of Netflix streaming content within two years.

NAD, along with the Western Massachusetts Association of the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired (WMAD/HI) and Lee Nettles, a deaf Massachusetts resident, brought suit against Netflix seeking that commitment in 2010.

First CVAA Captioning Deadline Has Arrived, FCC Posts Complaint Form

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce that the very first online closed captioning deadline arrived on September 30, 2012.  The NAD was a key leader along with other consumer organizations in the push to pass the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010 (CVAA) which requires access to online programming that has previously been shown on TV with captions.  Following the passage of the CVAA, the NAD participated heavily in the FCC rulemaking process where the FCC established specific rules for the enforcement of the CVAA.

Holmes, Beckman Appointed to the NAD Board

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Tawny Holmes and Joshua Beckman as appointed Board members for the 2012-2014 term. Holmes has been appointed to serve as an advisor on education and early intervention issues while Beckman will represent deaf and hard of hearing youth on the NAD Board.
