The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) recently introduced a new position statement on early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) approved at the NAD Board meeting in April 2010. In this position statement, the NAD states that it strongly believes that EHDI systems, practitioners, and associated professionals must reflect a positive attitude toward deaf or hard of hearing individuals, the American deaf and hard of hearing community, and American Sign Language (ASL).
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) wants to know about your experience with the Social Security Administration (SSA). Your answers will help the NAD understand how deaf and hard of hearing people communicate with the SSA.

The NAD Board of Directors selected John Patrick Evans during its recent meeting to fill the Region IV seat vacated by James “Manny” Johnson, who moved to Maryland. Evans will serve out the remainder of the term for this position (2008-2012). The NAD Board includes two members for each of the four regions of the U.S., who serve staggered four-year terms for their respective regions.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) sent letters to major, well-known dictionaries including Merriam-Webster, Oxford, American Heritage, Dictionary.com, Encarta, Harper Collins and Random House requesting that the word “audism” be added as an entry in their dictionary products. “Audism”, first coined in 1975, is generally defined as prejudice, stereotype, or discrimination – both intentional and unintentional – on the basis of hearing, typically against persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
The NAD, with the Hearing Loss Association of America and other consumer advocacy groups, advocates for nationwide captioned telephone service and opposes requirements that relay service communication assistants announce their presence on relay calls or disclose that a person is deaf or hard of hearing.
On April 7, President Bobbie Beth Scoggins sent a letter to Dorothy Cohler, Secretary of the “47” Alumni Association of the Deaf indicating that the NAD stands by its state affiliate, Empire State Association of the Deaf (ESAD) in their decision to preserve the integrity of “47,” the American Sign Language and English Lower and Secondary Schools (PS347 and M047, respectively). The following day, Sean Gerlis as NAD Board Region I Representative testified at a hearing, followed by ESAD President Dave Staehle at a second hearing the following week.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) wrote a letter to the Calfornia legislation expressing our concerns with Assembly Bill 2072 (AB 2072), a bill to amend the Health and Safety Code as it relates to the newborn and infant hearing screening, tracking, and intervention, and the California Early Start program.
Today is NAD Virtual Legislative Day in support of Twenty-first Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2009 (H.R. 3101)! This important bill would:
• Require all captioned TV programs on the Internet to be shown with captions
• Require that closed captioned (CC) buttons must be on TV remote controls
• Require that any device, even devices smaller than 13 inches, that shows TV must be able to display captions
• Provide special communication access equipment for people who are deaf-blind.
The National Association of the Deaf is pleased to announce that Access Interpreting (AI), a Deaf- and CODA-owned agency providing sign language interpreting services in the DC-metro area, will be coordinating interpreter services for the 50th Biennial National Association of the Deaf Conference to be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 6-10, 2010 at the Philadelphia Marriott-Downtown.
The NAD Board is coming to town! They will visit Capitol Hill to advocate on the importance of HR 3101 on Thursday, April 15, meet at the NAD headquarters on Friday & Saturday, April 16-17, and host “An Evening in Paris” - 2010 Spring Gala on Saturday, April 17 that includes a special tribute to Anita Farb on her retirement from the NAD. Members, supporters and the public are invited to join the board in these three activities.
