This week, the NAD observes International Week of the Deaf, which is celebrated by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and its national associations and their affiliates globally during the last full week of September (Monday through Sunday), culminating with International Day of the Deaf on the last Sunday of the week.
Last week, nine representatives from the disability community met with Attorney General Eric Holder at the U.S. Department of Justice to go over our priorities for the Department under his leadership. The meeting was a follow-up to the brief meeting that the Attorney General, President Obama, and Secretary of Labor Solis had with disability community representatives at the White House on July 24.
On Friday, September 25, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will host a workshop about 10-digit numbers and access to 9-1-1 emergency services for Internet Protocol Relay (IP Relay) and Video Relay Service (VRS) users. The NAD requested the Federal Communications Commission to begin the process of clarifying the rules about video relay service (VRS) provider activities.
In a press release on September 8, 2009, Netflix announced that “The Wizard of Oz” movie will be available for download, for free, for everyone on October 3, 2009. The NAD responded by asking Netflix to provide a captioned version of this movie for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. We encourage you to advocate for access.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) announces the retirement of Anita B. Farb, Director of Communications and Operations, with deep appreciation for her commitment to NAD and the American deaf and hard of hearing community over the last 24 years.
Last week, the NAD, along with other consumer groups, met with representatives of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to advocate for stable rates for video relay services (VRS) for the 2009-2010 rate period; for a summit to address continuing issues with the 10-digit numbering system for VRS and IP Relay services; and for FCC action on relay services, closed captioning, and other issues.
On August 20, 2009, the NAD participated in a workshop at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) called “Broadband Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities.” Rosaline Crawford, Director of the NAD Law and Advocacy Center, urged inclusion of people with disabilities in the development of the FCC’s National Broadband Plan. Too often, said Crawford, people with disabilities are left out and left behind.
Have you received a message from a “deaf charity” or a “deaf lottery” that said you won money? Did the message mention the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)? Beware. The NAD does not participate in “deaf charity” or “deaf lottery” programs.
The NAD announces program and sponsorship details for the Second Annual NAD Leadership Training Conference, to be held October 29-November 1, 2009 at the Hyatt at Capitol Square in Columbus, Ohio with the theme of Conquering Challenges: Leadership Beyond Barriers. The goal of this year’s conference is to address leadership challenges and opportunities that deaf and hard of hearing individuals face within rapidly changing nonprofit, educational, government, and corporate environments.
