FCC Seeks Comments on Captioned Telephone Relay Service

The NAD, along with other consumer advocacy groups, asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to require nationwide relay services for “captioned telephone” users. The FCC is now asking the public for comments on this issue. Support Captioned Telephone Service by sending your comment to the FCC by July 27, 2009.

Marcella M. Meyer Dies - Powerful Deaf Advocate

Long-time member of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and prominent deaf advocate Marcella M. Meyer passed away at the age of 84 in Los Angeles. Ms. Meyer was involved in interpreter issues as a NAD member. Her passionate activism has made this a better world and she will be missed! The July-August issue of the NADmag will include a feature article on the life of Marcella Meyer. An obituary appeared in the LA Times.

Deaf Sports Fan Files Complaint against Ohio State University

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the law firm Willis & Willis Co., L.P.A., filed a lawsuit on behalf of Vincent Sabino against Ohio State University (OSU). Mr. Sabino, an OSU sports fan who is deaf, wants OSU to provide captioning for announcements made over public address systems before, during, and after OSU events, such as basketball and football games.

On Friday, June 26, 2009, in the U.S. House of Representatives, Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced comprehensive legislation to ensure that people with disabilities have access to Internet-based communications and video programming technologies. The NAD urges members and supporters to let their elected representatives know how important this is for the American deaf and hard of hearing community.

Tragedy Leads to Improved Fire Safety in Texas

The Texas legislature recently passed a bill that will require landlords or owners of multi-family residences to provide, upon request, a visual smoke alarm to a deaf or hard of hearing occupant or renter. Although this is great news, it took a tragedy to get the State of Texas to finally take this important step to protect the lives of their deaf and hard of hearing residents.

Court Complaint Filed on Behalf of Pharmacist

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the law firm of White Arnold & Dowd, P.C., filed a complaint in federal court against the Alabama Board of Pharmacy, alleging that the pharmacy board refused to permit Barbara Jane Howard, a deaf pharmacist, to accept prescription orders through telecommunications relay services.  The complaint was filed in the United States District Court in Birmingham, Alabama. 

U.S. Senate Confirms FCC Nominations

On June 25, the United States Senate confirmed Julius Genachowski as the next chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He is a former FCC staffer and entrepreneur, and has spent the last decade in the private sector.

The U.S. Senate also approved the nomination of Robert McDowell for another term as an FCC commissioner. That same day, President Barack Obama nominated Meredith Atwell Baker as another FCC commissioner. Also pending is the nomination of Mignon Clyburn. The Senate is expected to act on these nominations soon.

U.S. Supreme Court Rules on Education Case

On June 22, 2009, the United States Supreme Court made a decision on a case, Forest Grove v. T.A., involving the education of a child with a disability. The  Court decided that if a parent proves that the public school system does not provide a free and appropriate public education as required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the parent may be eligible for reimbursement for private school tuition.
