As president of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), I am writing to you about the crisis concerning the South Dakota School for the Deaf (SDSD). As you know, there is a proposal to cut $2 million from the school, close the campus, and move to an outreach-only model. The NAD believes this would be a huge mistake. There has not been sufficient time to study how current services to students would be affected.
NAD joined nearly 100 other participants for the “Cochlear Implants and Sign Language: Building Foundations for Effective Educational Practices” conference held at Gallaudet University on April 15-17, 2009. The conference was attended by representatives from deaf schools and mainstream programs, as well as advocates and other interested parties. The purpose of the conference was to discuss effective practices to meet the needs of children with cochlear implants.
For many years now, The NAD Broadcaster has been the primary publication of the National Association of the Deaf, distributing the news of the Association. It has been sent to both national members of the NAD (those who join the NAD directly for $30 or $15 a year) and the State Association (SA) members of the NAD (those who join their State Association only, and NAD receives only $3 a year per member from their membership to cover the Broadcaster, support for a SA representative to attend annual SA President/ Representatives Conference and much more).
Settlement was reached in an important lawsuit that alleged discrimination against a family with a deaf father. The civil rights suit alleged that a group of Pennsylvania doctors discriminated on the basis of disability when it refused to provide medical care to a 15-month old child because the child's father is deaf and needs interpreting services.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) wishes to extend its appreciation to the Honorable Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, for his recent support of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children's Educational Bill of Rights. The NAD is grateful for his leadership commitment and responsiveness to the hard work of the New Mexico Task Force on Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the deaf community of New Mexico.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is urging consumers to protest against the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and tell the FCC to support closed captioning.
Maya & Miguel™, the award-winning children’s bi-lingual (Spanish-English) animated series on PBS KIDS GO!, is launching its third season with a special episode that presents insights and understanding about the challenges of learning another language – sign language. Inspired by the personal story of Maya & Miguel star Lupe Ontiveros, who is a mother of two deaf sons, "Give Me A Little Sign" will debut on September 25 on PBS KIDS GO!
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and Joseph B. Espo, an attorney with Brown, Goldstein & Levy, LLP in Baltimore, Maryland, filed a class action lawsuit against the Washington Redskins and FedEx Field football stadium.
The 48th Biennial National Association of the Deaf Conference held in Palm Desert, California from June 29-July 3, 2006 was a “hot” success. There were 1,600 official registrants with an additional 400 who took advantage of the technology-laden Exhibit Hall which was open to the public. While the temperature soared outside the beautiful Desert Springs Resort, people stayed cool inside in crowded workshops and general sessions. Many came, intent upon participating in the NAD and discussing “burning” topics.
