NAD Announces Membership Agreement with ACCI and RID

The NAD, RID, and the California Coalition of Agencies Serving the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCASDHH) formally completed its November 2005 membership agreement that brings American Consortium of Certified Interpreters (ACCI) interpreters into the auspices of the RID Certification Maintenance Program and the Ethical Practices System by converting those who passed the ACCI test at Levels III, IV or V to the corresponding levels of NAD certification.

NAD Distributes $2,000 to Mississippi Relief Organization

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) distributed $2,000 from the NAD Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund to the de l’Eppe Deaf Center of Gulfport, Mississippi to continue providing services for deaf and hard of hearing survivors.

NAD Moves to New Headquarters at End of March

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) will move at the end of this month to its new Headquarters offices in downtown Silver Spring, a few blocks away from its old building. The current Halex House location has been home to the NAD Headquarters for the past 35 years, is now in the process of being sold.

NAD and WFD Urge Support of UN Convention On Disability Rights

The World Federation of the Deaf, of which the National Association of the Deaf is a member, along with representatives of international disability organizations and United Nations delegations in January 2006 completed a new convention (universal agreement) on the rights of individuals with disabilities.

NAD Pays Tribute to Ralph White, NAD Past President

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was saddened to learn of the death of Past President Ralph H. White on February 15, 2006. White served as NAD president from 1978 to 1980.

Celebrate 125 Years of NAD Advocacy Where It All Started

A celebration of 125 Years of National Association of the Deaf (NAD) advocacy will be held at a Tri-State Gala hosted by the Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio Associations of the Deaf on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the Millennium Hotel in Cincinnati, Ohio. The NAD held is first convention in Cincinnati, Ohio in August 1880.

NAD Announces New Conference Motion Process

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) announced a new conference motion process to ensure that more NAD national members, Junior NAD members, official representatives of State Association affiliates, and official representatives of Organizational Affiliates are involved and part of the development of priorities for the Association. Motions can now be submitted in advance for consideration at the 2006 Biennial NAD Conference.

NAD Goes to Bat for Deaf Boy

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) filed a disability discrimination complaint against PONY Baseball/Softball, Inc. The complaint, filed with the United States Department of Justice, claims that PONY refused to allow an interpreter to be in the dugout during a youth baseball game, denying a deaf 10-year-old player effective communication with his coaches and teammates.

NAD Expresses Concerns about Alito Nomination

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) expressed its concerns about the nomination of Samuel A. Alito Jr. for the United States Supreme Court. Of particular concern are Alito’s previous rulings in the area of states’ rights and his approach to federal laws protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities and their families.

NAD and DHHCAN Seek Disaster Stories

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and Deaf and Hard of Hearing Consumer Advocacy Network (DHHCAN) want to learn about the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing adults and children during the recent disasters, such as the hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and wildfires that occurred in 2005. Your stories will be very important in helping us improve the preparation, response, and recovery to emergencies. We will keep your name confidential if you wish.
