NAD, Disability Groups, Meet With Department of Homeland Security

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), along with representatives of disability rights and advocacy groups, met with Secretary Tom Ridge and other senior leaders of the new U.S. Department of Homeland Security on October 22, 2003, to discuss employment, emergency preparedness, and access to technology.

NAD Advocacy Successfully Reinstates TV Guide Caption Icons

The National Association of the Deaf led a successful campaign to persuade TV Guide magazine to reinstate important identifying markers, also called caption icons, to help deaf and hard of hearing consumers recognize captioned television programs. TV Guide implemented these changes in response to the NAD letter and numerous complaints. The NAD posted the TV Guide email on the NAD website and distributed it via email encouraging members and non-members to send in their concerns.

Television Captioning Censorship Hurts Family Values

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) urged President Bush to overturn a recent decision by the U.S. Department of Education to declare almost 200 television shows inappropriate for captioning by the Department’s Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities program, effective October 1, 2003. According to NAD President, Andrew J. Lange, the Department's action is government censorship and contradicts President Bush’s promotion of family values and parental accountability.

Complaint sent to "TV Guide" magazine

The NAD has received numerous complaints about TV Guide no longer identifying shows that are captioned. The NAD has sent an email to changes@tvguide.com and encourage interested deaf and hard of hearing individuals to do the same. A copy of the NAD’s correspondence is below. NAD 2003 Youth Leadership Camp a Success at CSD's Camp Lakodia

The 2003 session of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Youth Leadership Camp (YLC), held in Madison, South Dakota at Camp Lakodia, a property of CSD, was an unqualified success! Part of that success was due to the generous support from CSD and the beautiful facilities that provided the best accommodations and services for the NAD YLC program.

National Association of the Deaf Announces First Dues Increase in Ten Years

The Board of Directors of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) voted at its May 2003 meeting, to increase National membership dues effective October 1, 2003. This is the first dues increase in ten years. Facing a severe financial crisis while simultaneously defending deaf and hard of hearing rights that have come under vigorous attack, the NAD Board felt it had no other option than to increase individual membership dues to $40 ($25 for Seniors and Students).

NAD to Appear at RID Conference in Chicago

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) will appear at the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Conference at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers in Chicago, IL, July 29-August 1, 2003. The NAD values its longtime relationship with RID and looks forward to participating in the RID Conference.

Senate Committee Marks Up IDEA Bill

The Health Education Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee of the U.S. Senate marked up and reported out S. 1248, its bill to amend and extend the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) through federal fiscal year 2009, Wednesday, June 25.

The NAD is still analyzing the committee's action. NAD staff are comparing the committee mark to the House-passed bill HR 1350.

NAD Appears at Deaf Expo – Philadelphia 2003

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) appeared at the Deaf Expo 2003 in Philadelphia, PA May 29-30, 2003 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Visitors at the new "eye" catching NAD display learned about the NAD efforts to protect the civil rights and improve the quality of life of all deaf and hard of hearing Americans.
