NAD to Appear at Las Vegas Deaf Worldwide!

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) will appear at the Las Vegas Deaf Worldwide Expo (DWW) in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Hall N1. NAD Youth Leadership Camp Appoints Director

The NAD appointed Adele Ann Eberwein of Santa Fe, New Mexico as Director of the NAD Youth Leadership Camp (YLC). She will begin her duties immediately to prepare for the 2003 session of YLC, from July 22 to August 12, at Camp Lakodia, South Dakota. The previous YLC Director, Maureen Yates Burns resigned to focus on her family and career.

NAD Announces Settlement in Hospital Case

Senate Delays Introduction of Bill to Amend the IDEA

According to U.S Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions staff the long anticipated Senate bill to amend the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) will be released shortly before the Memorial Day weekend. Originally slated for release on April 30th, 2003, the exact release date will appear in the Committee schedule for the month of May. The Committee website is located at:

Disability Rights Defeated!

The entire disability and deaf and hard of hearing community suffered a devastating loss on April 29, 2003 when the Senate narrowly voted to approve Jeffery Sutton’s nomination to the Sixth Circuit Appeals Court by only 52 votes (51 votes is necessary for approval). The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was very active in its opposition of Sutton, along with other disability organizations. The NAD opposed Sutton’s nomination because he has aggressively fought against the ADA, Olmstead, and many other civil rights laws that protect Americans with disabilities.

We, the NAD Board, with a heavy heart, accept Kent Kennedy’s resignation from the NAD Presidency, effective Saturday, May 3, 2003. The NAD Board unanimously proclaims recognition and gratitude for Kent Kennedy’s numerous years of service to the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Kent Kennedy has worked tirelessly to promote, protect, and preserve the rights and quality of life of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America.

NAD Announces Settlement in Deaf Umpire Case

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD), the New Jersey State Baseball Umpires Association, Inc. (NJSBUA) and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) announced today that they had reached an amicable settlement in a lawsuit brought by Peter Rozynski, a deaf umpire, under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The NJSBUA trains officials and provides baseball and softball umpires for high school games between NJSIAA member schools.

Andrew J. Lange Elected President

The Board of Directors of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) elected Andrew J. “Andy” Lange president at their May 2003 meeting in Silver Spring, Maryland, filling the vacancy resulting from the resignation of former President Kent Kennedy. Lange will serve out the remainder of Kennedy’s term ending at the Biennial NAD Conference in Kansas City in July 2004.
