NAD Announces Expansion of College Bowl Competition

The National Association of the Deaf is pleased to announce that the popular NAD College Bowl competition will expand to include any new colleges and universities interested in joining the biennial competition. Held at every NAD Conference since 1988, College Bowl is a spirited academic bowl-style event that brings together contestants from top universities serving deaf and hard of hearing students. Teams of four students from each college or university vie for the coveted trophy and scholarships.

Traditionally, three "legacy" schools have participated in College Bowl: Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology (NTID/RIT) in New York, and California State University at Northridge (CSUN). College Bowl players have become lawyers, teachers, scientists, and important advocates of the deaf and hard of hearing community. After twelve successful competitions among the three legacy schools, NAD invites any college or university that hosts a sizeable deaf and hard of hearing student population to apply to participate as a College Bowl team. The first competition with the expanded format will take place at the 2012 NAD Conference in Louisville, KY from July 3-7. The College Bowl Finals will take place on Thursday evening, July 5, 2012.

“Thanks to civil rights laws which NAD has been instrumental in passing and enforcing, college and university students enjoy better access to interpreters and other services. Deaf and hard of hearing students can now choose from a wide range of colleges and universities,” said NAD President Bobbie Beth Scoggins. “Schools that attract deaf and hard of hearing students should have the opportunity to play in College Bowl and we are pleased to expand this exciting competition.”

The College Bowl is open to teams of deaf and hard of hearing full-time undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in junior colleges or four-year colleges/universities. All members on a team must attend the same college or university. Each college/university is eligible to send one team. Each College Bowl teams consists of four team members and an alternate team member. The College Bowl program at the NAD conference will include preliminary competitions leading to the final competition.
