The Board of Directors of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) meets three to four times a year between biennial national conferences in each of the four regions, finances permitting.
The public is invited and encouraged to observe all Board meetings except for the retreat/orientation that is part of the first regular meeting following the biennial national conference. Below you will find dates of upcoming meetings, brief information from past Board meetings.

The NAD Board of Directors held its regular two-day meeting at the Texas School for the Deaf, with a community gathering and fundraiser on Friday evening at the TSD Deaf Smith Center where an assortment of delicious cupcakes and artwork by talented De’VIA artist and Austin resident Chuck Baird were auctioned – over 125 in attendance made for a very enjoyable event that included the presence of past presidents Gertie Galloway, Kent Kennedy and Andy Lange and remarks by Rachel Mazique as NAD Miss Deaf America 2010-12. This was followed by a late-evening event to benefit NAD, TAD and VAME at Rebels Honky Tonk where brave souls tried out their mechanical bull. On Saturday evening, a roast of CEO Nancy Bloch was held at the home of Paul and Avonne Rutowski after she was treated to a multi-course (and delicious!) culinary meal by deaf Chef Kurt Ramborger. Sponsorship for the weekend’s events were generously provided by AT&T, Communication Service for the Deaf, Convo Relay, Purple Communications, Tracfone Wireless and The Z, followed by 3 Bridges Interpreting, Communication by Hand, Dallas Captioning, iDeafNews, Let’s Get Aroused!, LotuSIGN, Texas Association of the Deaf, Texas School for the Deaf and VAME Awards.

The NAD Board of Directors had a most productive two-day retreat for the 2010-2012 term of office on September 9-10, followed by its first meeting of the term on September 11 at the Residence Inn – Inner Harbor in Baltimore, MD. The NAD Board of Directors met just prior to the start of and during what was a highly successful biennial national conference. On the day after the conference, outgoing and incoming board members came together for a debriefing, with plans for the new term by new and continuing members. The NAD Board of Directors arrived early to take part in NAD Legislative Day to advocate for support of H.R. 3101 and S. 3304 through meetings with Congressional members and staff (others across the nation took part through virtual means). The next two days, on Friday and Saturday, were focused on board business. This was followed by “Evening in Paris – 2010 NAD Spring Gala” with a very special tribute to Anita B. Farb in recognition of her more than 25 years of service to the NAD, with over 125 people in attendance and the support of the following sponsors: Access Interpreting, Communication Service for the Deaf, Gallaudet University, National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT, Purple Communications, Sorenson Communications and The Z (CSDVRS).

Members of the NAD Board of Directors, as part of their regular two-day meeting, had very enjoyable lunch interaction with Junior NAD advisors and student representatives from three schools. This was part of a very successful “Arizona Way” weekend that included a community reception and fundraising event (over 200 people attended), which was made possible through the generous support of Sorenson Communications; AT&T, Communication Service for the Deaf, Hamilton Relay, Purple Communications and The Z; Arizona Association of the Deaf, Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Arizona Relay Service 7-1-1, Arizona Hands and Voices, Arizona Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, Connecting Arizona Advocates, East Valley Association of the Deaf, GUAA Valley of the Sun Chapter, GUAA Tucson Chapter, Hands Accessing Reliable Interpreting Services, Phoenix Association of the Deaf, Phoenix Day School for the Deaf, Phoenix Deaf Women Organization and Sequoia School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

The success of this year’s NAD Leadership Training Conference, held October 28-31, 2010 at the Hyatt at Capitol Square in Columbus, Ohio. The theme of this year’s conference is Conquering Challenges: Leadership Beyond Barriers. NLTC ’09 was made possible through the generous support of Communication Service for the Deaf, CSDVRS (The Z), Gallaudet University, National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT, Ohio School for the Deaf Alumni Association, Purple Communications, Snap!VRS, Sorenson Communications, and TracFone Wireless.
Conference training areas focused on promoting diversity and sharing of diverse viewpoints, characteristics of successful leaders, proactive change leadership, coalition building and teamwork, accountable leaders, communicating effectively, conducting leadership search efforts, running healthy meetings, conflict resolution, and harnessing the power of social media. A total of 135 people were in attendance at the conference, which ended with a Halloween dessert reception.
Regional and affiliate caucuses were also held during NLTC ’09 break periods, to enable state association and affiliate representatives to confer on advocacy and related matters of importance within their respective areas. Resources support on youth leadership were available during the conference, after which time the NAD Board of Directors held its regular meeting on November 1-2, 2010.

The NAD Board of Directors met on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Philadelphia Marriott-Downtown. A Community Gathering and Fundraising event was held at the Crowne Plaza-Mainline on Friday, April 17, 2009 that attracted more than 125 people. The program included a performance by students from the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf, a live auction of De’VIA artwork and a fundraising drive. Delicious desserts sweetened the evening. A second Community Gathering and Fundraising event was held on Saturday evening, April 18 at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf where a committed group of 40 learned more about the NAD and generously gave their support. The NAD is grateful to the following for their meeting and event support: CSDVRS, Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (PSD), Purple, PSD Alumni Association, Silent Athletic Club of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and the Pennsylvania Society for the Advancement of the Deaf.

The NAD Board of Directors met on Friday, January 23 and on Saturday, January 24 in Clearwater, FL. A Community Fundraising Event was held on Friday evening January 23 that attracted more than 75 people who met the Board of Directors and showed their support. The NAD is grateful to the following for their meeting support: CSDVRS, Florida Association of the Deaf, Purple Communications, National Deaf Academy, Tri-County Association of the Deaf and West Central Florida Association of the Deaf.

The NAD Board of Directors met on at NAD Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland on Friday August 22 and Saturday August 23, 2008. A small fundraising event was held at the home of Julie Bourne and Matthew Lockhart on Thursday evening, August 21, sponsored by CSDVRS. A Community Open House was held on Friday, August 22 sponsored by Viable, Inc. Many people attended to meet the NAD Board and staff members, enjoy refreshments, and to mingle with old and new friends.
