Deaf Self Advocacy Training (DSAT)

Abstract:
The training is devoted to teaching Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind individuals to self-advocate for effective interpreting services. The content of the curriculum includes concepts of self-esteem and self-determination, the law, ethics of working with interpreters, video relay interpreting, preparing for self-advocacy, and how to effectively tap resources.

Corina Gutiérrez currently works as a Director of Community Advocacy at the State of New Mexico Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons. Corina was raised in Hatch, New Mexico, “the Chile Capitol of the World”. She is one of six children in a close-knit Mexican family. She attended the New Mexico School for the Deaf since the age of 6 and she received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. Corina has served on the New Mexico Association for the Deaf Board of Directors, as an advisory board member for Gallaudet University Regional Center – Southwest, as a board member for National Council of Hispano Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Raíces del Rio Grande, New Mexico Mano a Mano, and Council de Manos. Corina is currently serving as a board member for the New Mexico School for the Deaf Alumni Association.
