MELISSA: Hi! I’m Melissa. We’re here in Wisconsin for our sixth and last Board meeting of this two-year term before the NAD conference this summer. Our weekend was jam-packed with many wonderful things! During our visit, we met many people and learned about different local resources and programs. I’ll share a quick recap. On Thursday, we visited the Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD). The morning started with students introducing each Board member, and explaining about the school and its programs. We had lunch with the students and got to know them. Then we had our usual business meeting in the afternoon. Later that evening, we went over to the deaf club owned by the Southern Lakes Association of the Deaf (SLAD) to attend a Jr. NAD fundraiser hosted by two WSD students who were fundraising to be able to go to Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) this summer. Many people attended! It was a nice evening catching up with familiar faces and making new friends. The deaf club building that SLAD owns has a lot of deaf-related memorabilia on the walls, and we admired this walk through history. On Friday, we went to two schools in Milwaukee. In the morning, we visited Rufus King High School, a local mainstream program. Later in the day, we visited the Milwaukee Sign Language School (MSLS), another local mainstream program. Visiting MSLS was interesting because sign language is used throughout the school, in both deaf and hearing classes. Hearing students learn basic sign language which becomes useful during recess and other interactions. For the rest of the day, we continued our business meeting with some breaks in between for the school tour. Friday night, the NAD Board joined the Wisconsin Association of the Deaf (WAD) Board for dinner. Today, Saturday, we’re having our business meeting at IndependenceFirst, a center for independent living in Milwaukee. Later tonight, WAD will host a community event, and we are looking forward to that. It is hard to believe this two year term is almost finished. A lot of success was made possible by the Board, the committees, and headquarters staff, as well as collaborating affiliates and organizations — everyone made this two year term a success. Thank you for working with us and improving the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people. The NAD Conference this summer is quickly approaching! I’m looking forward to new priorities for the NAD to take on in the next term. You can take advantage of the early bird registration by April 30th. The next and final registration deadline is May 31st. I look forward to seeing you in Hartford!
