NAD Looks for Communications Specialist, Part-Time

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) seeks an enthusiastic and dedicated Communications Specialist to work at its Silver Spring office to provide a variety of communications and outreach support for the NAD.

Our Silver Spring, MD headquarters is seeking a part time Communications Specialist to join our team!  The Specialist will be responsible for maintaining and updating various social media platforms, gathering/maintaining web content, answering inquiries at the Front Desk, and supporting the Director of Communications as needed.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fulfill Front Desk hours and answer inquiries;
  • Maintain a media contact list;
  • Coordinate and handle the monthly eBlasts;
  • Manage all social media accounts (posting, liking, sharing, responding)
  • Create initiatives for the NAD to engage with the deaf and hard of hearing community;
  • Create awareness campaigns that utilize innovative social media tools to engage members of the community most effectively;
  • Oversee the creative direction, development, production and execution of social media and exhibit booths;
  • Work with the Director of Communications on the NADmag;
  • Serve as primary liaison to social networks, promoting new and on-going initiatives and outreach efforts;
  • Prepared to complete urgent requests; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Have a strong commitment to the NAD mission of promoting, protecting, and preserving the civil, human, and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people;
  • Possess experience (at least four years preferred) in a communications role (social media, advertising, receptionist, or marketing-related writing experience a plus), and have prior experience with digital communications;
  • Demonstrate a high level of knowledge and expertise with social media;
  • Capable of comprehensive strategic thinking and have rapid problem-solving skills to effectively handle crisis communications;
  • Handle frequent phone calls in a professional and positive manner;
  • Fluent in American Sign Language and in English, with an ability to write and edit quickly and clearly;
  • Familiar with the deaf and hard of hearing community, its culture and heritage;
  • Versed in graphic design concepts;
  • Able to develop and input caption files;
  • Adept in using Adobe Creative Suite for specific graphics to be shared via social media/web
  • Able to set and adhere to strict deadlines, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, ever-shifting environment;
  • Possess excellent planning and organizational skills; and
  • Pay exceptional attention to detail.

OTHER INFORMATION

Salary will be commensurate with candidate’s experience, with benefits.   The successful candidate will perform the required duties described above, at the Silver Spring, Maryland office of the NAD and also is expected to work from home when not required to be at the office.  Relocation expenses are the responsibility of the individual. The NAD will not be responsible to pay relocation expenses.
