Come to 2013 NLTC!

Don’t miss out on the NAD Leadership Training Conference (NLTC)

Join us in Omaha this October 3-5! Here’s a list why you should come!

The NAD has six reasons why you should register today:

1) Claudia Gordon as Keynote Speaker
As the newly appointed Associate Director of Public Engagement at the White House, Claudia Gordon is the highest ranking deaf person in the federal government. Her keynote at the NLTC will give you an understanding of what it’s like to work with the President of the United States!

2) Frank Turk Honored
During Thursday night’s opening reception, join the NAD in honoring Frank Turk who has done so much for many generations of deaf youth and the NAD! Get to know deaf leaders from all over the country as they gather in Omaha for this fun start to the training conference.

3) Workshops and Presenters
NLTC will be filled with great workshops presented by engaging presenters to give you tools to use in your work and advocacy back home. Learn legislative advocacy skills from Kim Bianco-Majeri, Andrew Phillips, and Fred Weiner, with a panel to include Ernest Garrett III and Pete Seiler; become excellent educational advocates with sessions by Tawny Holmes, Sheri Farinha, Caroline Jackson, Barbara Raimondo, David Reynolds, Susanne Scott, and Laurene Simms; or gain employment strategies with Khadijat Rashid, Ph.D., Sam Sepah, Ryan Maliszewski, Robert Cooper, Margie English, Lissette Molina, Elvia Guillermo, Dr. Sean Virnig, and other experienced experts.

And that’s not all! You will also meet Linsay Darnall, Jr. who will talk about the Principle of Buildership; Joshua Beckman and Allie Rice will discuss Youth in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community; Beth Benedict, Ph.D. will teach us EHDI 101 & State Level Advocacy; Steve Lovi, Richard McCowin, Chris Patterson, and Kirsten Poston will engage us on improving diversity in membership; Michael Michner, Philippe Montalette, and Mike Berger will go over how to financially protect your organization; Julie Rems-Smario and Lizzie Sorkin will give interactive Social Media tips; Andy Lange will teach Parliamentarian Principles, and Julie Schafer will cover the ongoing issues with Interpreters and State Licensure & EPS!

4) Nebraska Deaf Heritage Mixer & Tour
When you come, you will get a Omaha welcome! The Nebraska Association of the Deaf (NeAD), Nebraska Deaf Heritage Museum & Cultural Center (NDHMCC), and the Nebraska-Iowa Jr. NAD chapter will host the exciting Nebraska Deaf Heritage Mixer & Tour to welcome us to their beloved city of Omaha, Nebraska. You can purchase your ticket(s) (which also includes a roundtrip bus transportation from the Hilton Omaha) here. Admission fee is $15 per person and space is limited!

5) This is for YOU
The NAD has sought out groundbreaking presenters with engaging topics for you to leave after the conference to back home and make changes. Now is the time to change the system! How do we change other people’s perceptions of the deaf and hard of hearing community? How do we gain equality? How do we break through the glass ceiling and get promotions? How do we use technology to gain an edge in the workplace? How do we improve our organizations in today’s modern world? How do we achieve feats?

There are so many “How’s” and to answer these questions, we need to share information and our experience and expertise. To achieve our desired feats, we must defy the expectations that have been imposed on us by a society that does not always have the best view or understanding of deaf and hard of hearing people. We must learn to lead not only ourselves, but also lead society before they can view us with respect and equal standing.

* This means gaining skills in professional development and fully understanding all the tools and legal rights available to us to achieve our employment feats.

* This means acquiring effective communication skills and big picture thinking to achieve our personal and professional feats.

*This means learning all about the existing educational system and becoming savvy with the placement process to save the schools that teach deaf and hard of hearing children to achieve our educational feats.
