MELISSA: Hello, I’m Melissa and I’ll be sharing three things today: the NAD’s efforts to address systemic racism, the NAD board meeting in July, and important dates.

First, systemic racism is a serious issue. Systemic racism has been deeply rooted in America for many years, and that applies to the NAD as well. The NAD Board has discussed how we can actively remove these roots of racism — our work to address this continues. In my previous video update, the NAD Board was asked two questions, whether we know how to listen and if we understand racism. Since then we did trainings where the NAD Board was split into two groups: one group was of B- Black, I – Indigenous, and POC – People of Color (BIPOC) Board members and the other group was of white Board members. We had two deaf facilitators, one for each group, to ask questions and lead the discussions. At the second meeting, both groups met together to discuss and share perspectives on racism, the NAD’s history, and how we can improve and resolve the issues. At the third meeting, we discussed three parts: the past, present, and future. The past focused on what the NAD has done in the past to remove racism. The present focused on what we can continue to do as individual board members and as a group to address racism. The future is our action plan to implement anti-racism initiatives within the NAD. I’ll share a few action items we’ve done. For the 2012 – 2014 term, the NAD Board was required to complete 40-hours of privilege training. At each board meeting, we invited different experts who were familiar with specific “-isms” to provide training. This gave the NAD Board an opportunity to discuss how we can apply what we learned from the training into actions within the NAD. Also, individually, between meetings, we continued to read articles and books, or to attend training in our respective hometowns. Then, when we met again at the next board meeting, we would share what we learned and exchange resources. That continued through the term. The current board discussed wanting to bring that back. Another example that the board discussed, the NAD board has developed numerous position statements and policies that need to be revisited. We need to consider the white lens that was used when developing those policies. We need to  re-write them with an anti-racism  lens to ensure the policies include and are equitable to everyone, especially BIPOC. And, the last example, the NAD headquarters has different programs — the board wants to review the hiring processes as well as how other programs ensure all people are included. Those examples require ongoing work. We are in the process of developing our action plan which the Diversity Strategy Team (DST) will review.

Second, the recent NAD Board meeting happened last July. There were two main topics that were discussed: systemic racism within the NAD which I just shared with you and the Council of Representatives (COR) meeting that is happening on October 1st – 4th. We are focused on coordinating the logistics for this upcoming COR. Such logistics require different planning because we usually plan for in-person COR. However, the COR has shifted to being held virtually, which will be completely different from past COR meetings. We want to ensure delegates feel comfortable participating virtually.

Last, I have some important dates to share. Priority proposals and resolutions proposals are due on August 15th. Also, if you’re interested in running for the Board as an officer or region representative — the deadline to apply is also due on August 15th. Thank you.

Gracias.]
